Chatted with a dev friend and learned some interesting details about an upcoming game. He's going to be pissed if he sees this but oh well, I think its news a lot of gamers will care about.
Black Tree Gaming (Nexus Mods) is developing an open world RPG. The project is not yet named, but it takes place during Alexander the Great's reign and campaigns. You play as a close associate to Alexander, and you were secretly genetically modified as a young child to be very powerful. A secret society wants to use you without your knowledge to further their objectives.
The game is in very early development at the moment but the project appears to be proceeding. I'd expect to see the first content within 1 year or so.
The game is meant to be dynamic with dialogue choices that will effect events, responses, endings, progression, etc. RPGs like Fallout and Outer Worlds are being noted as major influences. You may even be able to kill Alexander yourself at the end (or be killed by him).
One interesting quirk to this project is that mythical/fantasy elements will play a large part. The idea is that mythical beings from Greek mythology will be real and standard parts of society.
In terms of the games overall premise, it's sounding like Deus Ex, AC Odyssey, and Fallout combined. The game is currently being built with Unity. A PC version is the primary build, but a release on consoles isn't ruled out (may depend how mod-friendly next gen consoles are).
The idea at the moment is to release it in chapters or separate installments, but this could change. Also at the moment, it is intended to be completely free. I'm a bit hazy on why that is but it seems Nexus Mods is treating this project as a promotional investment, rather than a revenue acquiring entity. I've also heard from someone else that the game is a means to promote Nexus's upcoming mod management/tool program, but I don't have further details on this aspect.
The intention is for the game to be highly moddable, with mod support available immediately on release (unclear if that refers to a final full release or per chapter releases).
Sounds like a cool game if executed properly. I'd expect an official announcement and some light marketing in 8-12 months, with the first chapter (if they still go that route) a few months after that. Also possible they do no announcement and just drop the first part as soon as it's ready.
