Leak-ish/speculation: The Avengers Project is Not Multiplayer/GaaS focused; Single player and narrative focus

Posting to this subreddit because why not.

A few months back, media outlets reported that Crystal Dynamics' Avengers game would be multiplayer focused/some type of Destiny clone. I have solid proof that that's not the case.

The recruiter for Crystal Dynamics posted this on LinkedIn a while back: https://image.ibb.co/dEoctk/IMG_1557.jpg Notice the Senior Producer job specifically joined with the single player campaign note in brackets, as well as 'writing focused' part next to the narrative designer/game writer job.

Also, he posted this:

Also some stuff from the Associate Cinematic Animator job that turns the phrase "highly narrative":

One thing that I know people were using as an indication was this excerpt from the teaser description;

Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.

Very distinct emphasis on story. It's important to remember that neither Crystal Dynamics or Eidos Montreal specialises in anything but single player adventure games of some sort.

Both studios are hiring for Network Engineers, and there's one job available at CD for Level Design for online functionality, but it's not enough for a shift to Games-as-"Services". As for the 'universe for years to come' thing, a lot of people and publications forget that this is a multi-game, multi-year deal. Avengers is just the beginning. That universe they're referencing is likely the Marvel Games Universe (MGU). The games version of their Cinematic Universe. I thought it was kind of obvious to be honest.

“By partnering with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-MontrĂ©al, we are now working with two of the industry’s most talented and respected game development studios to bring Marvel stories to life in ways our fans have never experienced,“ said Jay Ong, Senior Vice President, Games & Innovation, Marvel Entertainment. “The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix.”

Yosuke Matsuda has indicated the game is playable, which isn't surprising considering they've been working on it since late 2015. I expect to see it latest at E3 next year, and a release date of May-June 2019, close enough to Avengers 4.

Also the newest update about the recent hires again puts an emphasis on story, particularly from former Naught Dog Creative director Shaun Escayg:

“I’m thrilled to join Crystal as Creative Director and be aligned with a team as passionate about telling great character based stories as I am.”

I'm sure there will be co-op (not so much for PVP though), but multiplayer/online functionality clearly isn't the focus here.

Yes, I know Eidos Montreal has said that they're adding more emphasis on multiplayer stuff (probably for their Guardians game), but both the studio head and Square Enix has reaffirmed their dedication to single player stuff.

CEO Yosuke Matsuda: We will definitely be making more single-player games, don’t worry about that! We will definitely be making more single-player games, definitely. I think the environment now, that we have, there’s even more platforms, there’s even more opportunities to get single-player games out to people. So, for example, mobile phone games, we’re not just making free-to-play games for that, we’re making proper single-player games, re-releases of old titles, new titles as well. So mobile phones don’t just have to be about that kind of thing. The Switch is another great platform to come out for single-player games, so we’ve got a lot of opportunities and we really do want to continue making single-player games!
